Legal and Charitable Status of the University

The institution was incorporated as a Higher Education Corporation (HEC) on 21 November 1988 by virtue of the Education Reform Act 1988 (ERA) (Commencement No. 2) Order 1988. The Further and Higher Education Act 1992 (section 77) enabled Higher Education Corporations who were Polytechnics to change their name to University and on 16 June 1992 the Privy Council gave its consent to the new name of the Corporation, and our official, and preferred name, The University of Huddersfield.

University of Huddersfield

As a higher education corporation, the University is not registered with Companies House and does not have a company registration number.

For further information, including the University’s Instrument and Articles of Government please view the University of Huddersfield's governance web pages.

Charitable Status

The University has charitable status as an exempt charity under Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011. It is therefore subject to charity legislation but is not required to register with the Charity Commission and is not regulated by it. As an exempt charity, the University does not have a registered charity number.

In 2018, the Office for Students replaced the Higher Education Funding Council for England as the independent regulator for higher education in England. The Office for Students was set up by the Higher Education and Research Act of 2017 and it published its new regulatory framework in February 2018.
