Whether you’re intending to use a Law degree as the start of your legal career in the legal profession, or as the stepping-stone for other career opportunities, a degree in this area can set you up for a fantastic, dynamic and successful career. A law qualification can lead to so many diverse career paths, such as a paralegal, solicitor, or barrister – each one exciting and rewarding in its own way.
Across all our courses, in the first year, you’ll study the core legal concepts alongside an understanding of developments in the English and European legal systems. We offer a number of degree programmes, where you can choose from a wide range of optional modules, as you progress through your degree, so you can tailor your learning to your interests whether that be anything from company, land, property, human rights, commercial or EU law – just to name a few.
As a Law student, you'll benefit from Law Trove, a free online service giving you unlimited access to over 200 legal textbooks, meaning you spend less on textbooks.
We have an innovative Partners in Law scheme whereby we work closely with lots of local and national firms including Chadwick Lawrence, DLA Piper, Eaton Smith, Eversheds Sutherland, Kirklees MBC, Pinsent Masons, Ramsdens Solicitors, Ridley and Hall, Schofield Sweeney, Switalskis, Walker Morris and Wilkinson Woodward.
In addition to our Partners in Law, our graduates have gone on to work for a range of legal employers including the Crown Prosecution Service, Womble Bond Dickinson, Gordons, Clarion and HM Courts and Tribunals Service.*
Our students take part in lots of development opportunities. We hold regular mooting competitions for our students. Mooting gives Law students the chance to see what it is like to advocate in court (as a barrister) arguing for either the appellant or respondent. The process consists of researching the legal issues, drafting up a court bundle, and presenting arguments against an opposing counsel before a judge who will rule at the end based on the legal issues, quality of individual skills, and the best team overall.
Our students get to attend careers fairs and mentoring events where they get to meet with law practitioners to seek career advice and find out about opportunities. The Law Fair takes place every year and is open to students from all years on all law courses. The professional mentoring scheme supports our third and fourth year students to navigate the transition from University into practice. These events are a great way to network with employers and learn about what it’s like to work in law at a wide range of organisations and businesses.
You might get the chance to be part of our Legal Advice Clinic, based in Oastler building, offering free assistance to those who otherwise would have no access to legal help. You will work closely with Law academics to research and lead on real cases.** There's also the opportunity to shadow local solicitors during weekly drop-in sessions open to the local community. These sessions cover various areas of law each week, such as family, employment, landlord and tenant disputes, and more.

You'll get to undertake the Global Professional Award (GPA), an innovative programme designed to equip you with the tools needed for success at university and to thrive in your chosen field after graduation. You'll be able to gain a Level 5 qualification from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), demonstrating to employers your leadership qualities.
The routes to qualification as a barrister or solicitor has recently been reviewed. Both the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards (BSB) no longer require the study of a 'Qualifying Law Degree' (QLD), however, the study of what is referred to as the 'seven legal foundations of knowledge' is still required prior to the vocational stage of bar training. All our undergraduate law degrees meet this requirement.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has introduced the Solicitors Qualifying Examination route to qualification. This route requires a degree in any subject or equivalent Level 6 qualification.
