Welcome to your new global community

We have a large global community at Huddersfield, with over 3,300 international students from all over the world (HESA 20/21).

Our culturally diverse community bring global experiences, ideas and an international perspective; enhancing the university experience for everyone.

As a student at the University of Huddersfield you’ll become a part of our supportive, vibrant and welcoming community of like-minded people.

Global societies

As well as the many sports clubs and societies there are at Huddersfield, there are over 60 global societies to get involved in. All are free and open to everyone. The societies are a place to learn about different cultures, meet people from your own and other countries and to get together or host events for the student community to attend.

Global events

Throughout the year we work alongside our students to host a calendar of free events, workshops, and trips.

With students from over 100 nationalities (HESA 21/22) in our international community, you don’t need to travel far to share cultural experiences. No matter where you are from, you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people, experience other cultures and take part in global celebrations such as Lunar New Year, Global Week or our Food and Culture Festivals.

Global Week

Every year in February we have a dedicated week of cultural celebrations. There are lots of different events and activities for everybody to get involved with.

Each year you will have the opportunity to experience sport tournaments, food festivals, film festivals, cultural events and workshops.

Global Week allows students from the UK and around the world to showcase their countries, cultures and make friends along the way.

Global Week

Here's a look back at our most recent Global Week.

"Global Campus Events are hugely popular at the University of Huddersfield and a key part of student experience! I have always recommended and invited my friends to participate in at least one event during the University’s Global Week. Through these events, I have made friends from all over the world. I have found it to be a great way to learn about new cultures first-hand."

Lunar New Year

Every year we host Spring Festival and a Lunar New Year celebrations, showcasing tradition and culture from many East and South-East Asian countries.

Lunar New Year, known as Spring Festival in China, is celebrated on the last day (Chu Xi) and first day of the new year (Chu Yi). The Lunar New Year festival is known as Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in South Korea. We have celebrations and talent shows on campus to celebrate when the New Year falls.

Our global societies host Lunar New Year festivities on campus throughout the day followed by a Chinese Evening Gala.

"The atmosphere of the celebrations was wonderful and helped to alleviate some of the homesickness of our students living far from home.
I learnt many things from planning and hosting this event which has allowed me to learn more about managing and running events, interacting with people, preparing social-media content, and boosting my confidence."
