Applications for research degrees can be made throughout the year, normally to commence on one of these start dates:

Deadlines for applications

April 2017 start date

  • UK/EU applicants: 30 March 2017
  • International applicants: 28 February 2017

September 2017 start date

  • UK/EU applicants: 30 July 2017
  • International applicants: 30 June 2017

Entry requirements

The general entry requirements for all our research degrees are a first or upper second class honours degree from a UK University or a qualification of an equivalent standard in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed. Before submitting your application make sure to check the specific entry requirements of the research degree you are applying for as these may vary depending upon subject area.

Please note that the University has formal entry requirements for applicants whose first language of instruction is not English. These are normally English Language qualifications, which we recognise as meeting our entry criteria. Requirements may vary between programmes and subjects so you are advised to check these carefully when going through the specific course information.

Application process

The process for applying to study for a research degree is as follows:


Once you have a clear idea of the research topic you are interested in, you need to identify the research degree you would like to apply for by searching our research degree course listings. You can arrange to have an informal discussion with a potential supervisor prior to applying. To identify potential supervisors take a look through our Academic Staff Profiles.

Making a formal application

To make a formal application, complete the online research degree application form.

This normally requires the submission of a research proposal. You can check whether the degree you are applying for requires a proposal by looking carefully through the specific course details on our course listings. If a research proposal is required for the degree you are applying for please read through our research proposal guidelines to make sure you cover all the information needed and include your research proposal when submitting your online application.

There are a number of research scholarships available for research degree candidates. If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, please include the type of scholarship you are interested in on your application form.

Applications are assessed based upon academic excellence, relevant experience and how closely your research proposal aligns with Huddersfield's key research areas. 'Research at Huddersfield' webpage provides an introduction to the research areas at the University, including research staff profiles and their key areas of interest.

Writing your research proposal

If applying to study for a research degree at the University you will normally need to enclose a research proposal of approximately 1000-2000 words, submitted as part of your application.

Once offered a place as a research student it is not mandatory to adhere closely to the specifics of your original research proposal. However, since your proposal forms the foundation of your working relationship with your prospective supervisor(s) it cannot be altered without discussion and consultation with them. If you have been unable to include your proposal with your original application we will offer you 21 days to respond with a proposal. After the deadline has passed, if you have not submitted the proposal, we will be unable to consider your application.

Please note that if your course requires a research proposal and you don’t include it in your application, we might not be able to consider your application.

What happens next?

When we have received your research proposal, we will be able to process your application. We will invite you to submit the following additional documentation:

  • Evidence of academic qualifications
  • Evidence of English Language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English
  • Copy of your passport or equivalent identification, dependent upon your nationality
  • At least 2 academic references on letter-headed paper, signed and dated by your referees

You will have 21 days in which to send us this additional documentation. If after this time you have not responded to us, we will be unable to consider your application.

Our decision

When we have made our decision, we will email you with the outcome. If you are accepted to study here you will either receive a conditional or unconditional offer sent to you by email. This offer letter is a binding contract between you and the University and the decision slip must be completed, signed and returned to us as soon as possible to secure your place.

This letter will outline all the relevant details for your study including the start date, expected end date and what fees you will need to pay.
