Biography

Zhijie (Professor of Visual Computing) has received a BEng degree on communication engineering from the Xi’an University of Science and Technology in 1991. After graduation, he has worked for one of the major Chinese Electrical and Machinery Companies - HH Yellow River Ltd for four years as an electronics engineer. He then traveled to the UK and spent a year working in a robotics lab in Derby. In 1996, he registered and became a postgraduate student at the University of Derby. His research topic is Virtual Reality for manufacturing simulations. In 2000, he has completed his PhD study and immediately been offered a tenured academic post at the University of Huddersfield.

Zhijie’s research in the last twenty years has mainly been focused on the areas of visual computing, vision systems, data science and machine learning. He has published over one hundred peer-reviewed journal and conference papers as well as editing 5 books in the relevant fields. He has supervised 11 postgraduate (including 8 PhD) students to completion and been continuously winning substantial research and development grants in his career to date. He is a member of the IEEE, IET, BCS, BMVA and a fellow of HEA. In addition, he has been serving as an editor, reviewer and chair for many prestigious academic journals and conferences.

Research and Scholarship

The underpinning research of Dr Xu has encompassed a wide spectrum of modern engineering and computing subjects, including Virtual Reality (VR) and virtual manufacturing, Web-driven “e-” technologies, machine vision, hardware architecture and computational acceleration, knowledge modelling and mathematical theories. This work can be traced back to the early 2000s with a series of successful KTP/JISC bids and publications led by Dr Zhijie Xu for contract research with UK government and industry [Refer to the Research Output Section].

The main research outputs can be divided into 3 tiers, firstly, the work was focusing on devising new algorithms for the acquisition, storage, and processing of image and video data; secondly, the development of computational acceleration technologies, especially through the cost-effective and hardware-based techniques; finally, the post-processing knowledge management, retrieval, and visualisation, for example:

  • A Spatial-Temporal Volume (STV) and region intersection (RI) based 3D shape-matching method has been developed to facilitate the definition and recognition of human actions from real-life Close-Circuit Television (CCTV). The distinctive characteristics and the performance gain of the devised approach stemmed from a coefficient factor-boosted 3D region intersection and matching mechanism. The investigation has contributed to the domain knowledge and practices through a new set of techniques for efficiently filtering and reducing the amount of voxels (volumetric-pixels) that need to be processed in each operational cycle in an application system. The encouraging features and improvements on the operational performance registered in the experiments have been published in a series of papers, including a best-paper award received in ICAC’09.

  • Many essential visual signal processes and computer graphical operations are suffering from prolonged computational time and had failed to support real-time or online applications such as Virtual Reality and some diagnostic engineering tasks. Dr Xu designed and developed novel implementation strategies to transform algorithm acceleration from a mainly software paradigm effort into hardware arena, for example, through mapping Gaussian-, FFT-, and Wavelet-based filters onto the Graphics Process Units (GPUs). This research has satisfied the demands from many computational intensive applications. A series of papers have been published with corresponding experiments showing 20x speed gains.

  • With the ever increasing and accumulative so-called “features” being extracted from data, text, images and videos, a substantial challenge was raised over their effective storage and management, query and retrieval, and, visualisation and understanding. Traditional data management tools such as databases (i.e. relational, object-oriented) suffer from their operational rigidity due to loose mathematical foundations. Category Theory has shown promising characteristics in curing those foundational problems. Dr Xu has developed a methodology to turn Category Theory concepts into programming functions and classes. A piece of software – virtualGPS - has been developed to manage the Geometrical Product Specification matrices for bridging the gap in between International Standards and their practical implementations through a knowledge-based system, including measurement procedure formation, knowledge generation, and data modelling.
