Book of the Week in the Telegraph and Argus

Grist publishes anthologies of the best new writing from around the world in English.

The philosophy of Grist is to place emerging writers alongside established writers in order to raise their profile and help them establish the first step to becoming professional writers. With this in mind we have previously published poets Simon Armitage, Ian Mcmillan and Lemn Sissay and prose writers Helen Simpson and John Boyne (author of the Boy in The Striped Pyjamas) who have all kindly donated poems and stories for the previous collection. Grist’s latest publication is an anthology of short fiction called Outside the Asylum. It features 26 original, previously unpublished stories, from both established and emerging writers. It includes new work from Melvin Burgess, Toby Litt and Alexei Sayle.

Our anthologies are given away free to selected libraries, HE institutions and literary agents, making this a unique publishing venture. Grist does not need to consider commercial pressures so we are free to do things differently.

The published anthologies consist of our competition winners alongside specially commissioned work from established writers. Grist is interested in fresh new voices with something to say. The first Grist Anthology of New Writing was published in 2009.

Patrick Stewart, Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield says:

"by putting emerging writers alongside some of the biggest names in contemporary literature, Grist provides a unique opportunity for those starting out as writers ".

For the reader of Grist, each issue in book form provides two hundred pages of the best new writing around.
