About the course

This specialist skills and post registration development short course provides an introduction to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Mental Health Act 1983. It focuses on the context in which these Acts are applied and how they relate to a wider safeguarding agenda.

This course offers the opportunity to:

• Critically examine the concepts of mental capacity and mental disorder within the context of the current policy and legislative framework relating to this field of practice.

• Explore models of capacity and mental disorder from both a medical model and alternative perspectives. • Develop a critical understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983 and The Mental Capacity Act 2005.

• Develop the competences required to relate your learning to your own practice.

This course is designed to complement the [Best Interest Assessor (BIA)|00006969] short course and provides the necessary pre-requisite knowledge for those who are not Advanced Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP) trained.

Entry requirements

You must:

•  Possess a (any subject) degree or an equivalent qualification.

•  Be a health or social care practitioner.

•  Have relevant experience within a health or social care setting.

If you do not possess a degree but have relevant experience, you may be required to undertake preparatory work to demonstrate your ability to study at postgraduate level.

If you are not registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and if your first language or language of instruction is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.5 in writing and no other element lower than 6.0, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.

This short course will assist you to meet the specialist skills and post-registration development requirements stipulated by your employer/professional regulator.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through a series of lectures and independent study, which will be supported by the University's virtual learning environment.

Assessment will include submission of a case study.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Huddersfield is the only University where 100% of the teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.*

∗permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.
