About the course
Society today places a huge range of demands on the engineering community. These range from the desire for ever more sophisticated consumer goods to the challenges imposed by the need for clean forms of power and transport. Faced with these demands, engineering industries in the UK are continually seeking professional engineers with high levels of expertise and skills.
If you are graduate from an engineering or closely related science discipline and you would like to extend your knowledge, skills and ability to the level required for senior positions in industry and for Chartered Engineer status, this course can help you achieve these goals.
By providing you with a greater depth of knowledge and skills in engineering science and expanding your technical skills into previously unfamiliar areas of mechanical engineering and related subjects this course can help you to broaden your skills and knowledge and develop the management know how for you to succeed as a manager within an engineering organisation.
You will also have the opportunity to undertake a substantial project that will allow you to develop your own particular interests within the broad area of mechanical engineering.
There maybe opportunities to work in an advanced precision engineering laboratory with a range of ultra-precision surface measurement, coordinate measurement and machining equipment. A range of mechanical test analysis equipment is also provided. Within our automotive lab a range of engine test beds, a wind tunnel and a four-post ride simulator are also available for students that undertake their project in this area.

Entry requirements for this course are usually the following:
• An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Systems or a closely related science subject area or an equivalent professional qualification.
• You are also encouraged to apply if you have other qualifications and/or experience and can demonstrate that you are equipped with knowledge and skills equivalent to Honours degree level
For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.

Technical modules such as Finite Elements Analysis and Dynamic Analysis is taught to ensure that you are equipped to effectively study the more advanced analytical elements of the course. Building on this, Advanced Mechanical Analysis and Aerodynamics modules are taken to look deeper into these subject areas. You will become equipped to undertake non-linear solid, complex dynamic and advanced computational fluid dynamic analysis.
Non-technical subjects is included in this course with the study of Quality Management, Project Management and New Product Development. These modules will provide you with a good basis to undertake your project and a framework for your future career development.
Professional Development and Research Methods
This is an innovative module which you will hopefully find not only challenging but also rewarding as it aims to extend the way you think about engineering management excellence and research application. It has been designed to deliver a detailed understanding of overarching professional management concepts and standards, based upon the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence, together with both industrial and academic career progression. The module provides a number of diagnostic instruments and application tools which enable you to benchmark your interpersonal skills and provide reflective career planning through portfolio development, aligned to professional registration routes. It will further examine the process of change management and the importance of technical and commercial leadership within an industrial context. Specific focus will be placed upon individual obligations to society, the profession and the environment.
Total Quality Engineering
This module has been designed to be offered to students who have a basic understanding of operations management, quality assurance and control, together with the statistical techniques employed in probability theory. The module aims to build on this knowledge, giving you the ability to implement and operate quality systems, maintenance regimes and reliability trials.
Vehicle Aerodynamics and Air Management
This module combines the use of theoretical, experimental and computational tools to help you develop a thorough understanding of aerodynamic features associated with moving vehicles as well as air handling requirements. The module introduces you to various commercial computational fluid dynamics packages.
This module aims to develop improved understandings of the strategic aspects of programme and project management and its role in adding competitive advantage to your enterprise. You will have the chance to gain a firm grounding in the principles, processes, tools and techniques that underpin programme and project management, but also be encouraged to challenge traditional thinking in the field. Concepts, standards and techniques for project and programme lifecycle management are introduced, developed and applied, with the aid of industrially relevant case material. Emphasis is placed upon the need for competence in project planning and control. Team-working, communication and risk management skills are developed by means of group activity. Extensive use is made of project management software.
Advanced Static Analysis
This module aims to extend your knowledge of the scientific principles used in more advanced static analysis of mechanical components and systems and to understand the role that mathematical and computer based modelling plays in this type of analysis. The module allows you the opportunity to gain experience in the use of commercial analysis software to solve non-linear structural problems.
Advanced Dynamic Analysis
This module aims to combine theoretical and practical analysis of dynamic motion with a focus on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). You’ll have the opportunity to study both vibration and control techniques with topics including vibration theory, mechanical control, forced vibration, resonance, Sdof (Single degree of Freedom) and MdoF (Multiple degrees of Freedom) systems and NVH applications.
Development of Dimensional Measurement
The module combines the theory and practical application of metrology for dimensional measurement of manufactured components. The module reviews the basic principles of metrology including calibration, traceability and inter-changeability. You'll be supported in performing measurements and in analysing data during laboratory work and study contemporary instruments including laser interferometers and co-ordinate measurement machines (CMMs). The application of international standards and the propagation of uncertainty associated with practical measurement, in particular the effects of temperature, will be reviewed and the use of temperature measurement techniques such as thermal imaging will be covered.
New Product Development
There is always a demand for products with improved quality, speed and price; and businesses need to update their product portfolios to meet this demand.
This module explores the skills required to implement and manage the new product development (NPD) process within the context of a commercial enterprise. You'll have the opportunity to examine the evolution, development and exploitation of NPD strategies; together with consideration of innovation policies, models, culture and practice.
You’ll may also develop appropriate management methodologies that can enable you to assess new product ideas, determine feasibility, and identify those products that will be a commercial success.
The project provides the opportunity to undertake a major programme of advanced independent work. Where possible the project is carried out in collaboration with an industrial company and takes place at the company. A project supervisor is then allocated at the University who would check and confirm if the project is suitable for a Master's level course.
Our Master's courses normally take three years to complete. We recognise the pressures on busy part-time students and professionals, so we offer interim awards of Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma - this means that you can usually exit with a qualification after one or two years.

The Master's qualification is regarded as the professional benchmark for engineers and it gives those who show potential the opportunity to study Master's level modules, meeting all the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Teaching and assessment
The course is taught principally through lectures, tutorials, studio-based assignment work and lab-based research activities. The lab activities make use of industrial standard software and mechanical facilities. Assessment methods reflect the emphasis of the course on the ability to apply knowledge and skills, and are diversely linked to examination, assignment, project work and research/laboratory activities.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the part-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £425 per 15 credit module and £850 per 30 credit module (see Fees and Finance for exceptions).
