About the course
We are proud that our course currently:
• This course provides nurses with the opportunity to become qualified in assessment, diagnosis and management of a wide range of clinical presentations in primary and secondary care settings.
• This route aims to meet the standards of education for Advanced Nurse Practitioner training recommended by the Royal College of Nursing and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
• The qualification gained provides you with the opportunity to work autonomously and collaboratively meeting the health needs of their patients at the highest standard possible.
• This route aims to combine the best of medicine, nursing and allied health skills to enhance service provision and patient care.
The development of the role of advanced nurse practitioner is one of the ways the Government plans to modernise the National Health Service and improve the quality of healthcare. They add a new dimension to healthcare. Capable of working autonomously with high levels of skills, healthcare practitioners work as part of inter-disciplinary healthcare teams, complementing existing provision and improving patient care.
This course is designed to help experienced nurses take on this challenging role in healthcare settings. It aims to provide additional theoretical and clinical practice education and training not addressed in initial healthcare education. This is at an appropriate level to support the expansion of practice and the development of new skills; specifically clinical history taking, clinical examination skills and consultation skills.

2-3 years part-time
• Applicants must hold current registration on part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register. A period of 3 years post-registration nursing experience will be required.
• Applicants to this course will also be required to hold a first degree in nursing or other relevant health related subject OR
• provide other evidence of their ability to study at post-graduate level. Examples of indicators of ability to study at master's level that may be accepted as evidence include one or more of the following:
• Successful completion of a module (s) at Master's level.
• A report (written or verbal) of an aspect of practice role development or of clinical practice in which the applicant played a prominent role, identifying strategies utilised at key stages and academic skills required for successful completion of the project. Ideally this will include evidence of ability to undertake electronic searches and critically review relevant literature.
• Successful completion of a substantial amount of relevant study at Honours level for which credit has been awarded, as evidenced by an educational transcript, that indicates readiness to progress to studying at a more advanced level.
Requests by applicants for accreditation of prior certificated learning (APL) and / or for accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL) to enable entry to the course with credit will be considered by the Admissions Tutor and where considered appropriate.
All applicants who meet the entry criteria will be invited to attend for an interview.
Applicants must be released by your current NHS employer for 2 days per week and have a named Clinical Educator who has been qualified for 5 years.
Critical Appraisal of Research Literature
In this module you will be encouraged to develop your understanding of methodological design. You will study the critical appraisal of a variety of aspects of published quantitative and qualitative research in practice settings, and will consider the utilisation of your knowledge and skills in future career developments, through pursuing autonomous practice and agenda setting in your profession. You will be assessed through one piece of coursework.
Clinical Sciences and Clinical Skills for Advanced Practitioners (1)
You will study the theoretical principles required to carry out effective diagnosis, assessment and management of undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions in addition to pre-diagnosed conditions related to the respiratory, ear, nose and throat, cardiovascular, skin and neuro-muscular systems. You will explore how to generate differential diagnoses in addition to making informed collaborative decisions about the management of your patient’s presentation. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding, in order to demonstrate competency in these clinical skills applied to the context of your clinical practice. You will be assessed via written coursework, an E Portfolio and an OSCE examination.

Assessment of the Acutely/Critically Ill Adult
This module offers you the opportunity to focus your studies on the assessment of an acutely/critically ill adult in any healthcare setting. Emphasis throughout the module is placed on accurate assessment of the acute and critically ill person, interpretation of clinical presentations followed by appropriate responses with implementation and evaluation of therapeutic interventions. You will be assessed through one piece of coursework and one practical. Firstly you will submit an essay and secondly you will undertake a Simulated Clinical Examination (pass/refer/fail).
Clinical Sciences and Clinical Skills for Advanced Practitioners (2)

You will explore how to generate differential diagnoses in addition to making informed collaborative decisions about the management of your patient’s presentation. You will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and understanding, in order to demonstrate competency in these clinical skills applied to the context of your clinical practice. You will be assessed via a written coursework, an E Portfolio and an OSCE examination.
Independent and Supplementary Nurse Prescribing (V300)
This module prepares you to be an Independent and Supplementary Nurse Prescriber. You will explore the relevant laws, ethics, policy, evidence based and practice components of prescribing. You will be assessed through coursework involving a case study. In order to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements, you will also be assessed in practice by your medical mentor and complete two exams in pharmacology and numeracy, which will be assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Through this module you will have the chance to formulate, negotiate and undertake an assignment, which will provide the opportunity for you to enhance your practice knowledge and abilities within your workplace. This will also provide evidence of learning for academic review, as well as reflect on the process of practice development. You will be assessed through one piece of coursework.
Project (Health Related)
This module provides the opportunity to develop a working project proposal facilitated with learning materials and procedural guidance made available electronically. In addition you will attend lectures and have access to supervision with a subject specialist or researcher in the field. You will be assessed through submission of coursework in the form of a project.

An appropriate clinical placement in primary or secondary care is compulsory for this route.
Graduates of this route have gone on to work as Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Clinical Practitioners in GP Surgeries, A&E departments.
Teaching and assessment
The theoretical material will be addressed by means of lectures, seminars, action learning sets incorporating the virtual classroom and tutorials. The development of the student's competencies/practical skills will be addressed in part in a skills laboratory, but principally whilst the student is working under the supervision of a clinical educator during placement in a healthcare setting.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the part-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £425 per 15 credit module and £850 per 30 credit module (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations. Interim Awards A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take one calendar year full-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level or Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
