About the course
Current government reforms in education are focused on early childhood development and the importance of high quality early years provision in preparing young children and babies for the best start in life.So if you're aspiring to be an early years specialist and want to train to teach babies and young children from birth to five years, then this course could be for you.
A highly skilled workforce is seen as critical in supporting high quality early years provision and so upon successful completion of the course you'll be awarded Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). This reflects the significant role you'll have in working with young children. EYTS is awarded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (gov.uk/government/organisations/national-college-for-teaching-and-leadership) on behalf of the Department of Education.
You'll have the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of early childhood; looking at the role of play, considering different curriculum models and examining the impact of early childhood research and theories on current government perspectives and policies.We work in partnership with a strong network of providers to deliver EYTS training and your placement forms a key element of your course.Your placement can provide you with opportunities to enhance your learning and to develop the skills that employers are looking for.

We offer two routes leading to the new award of Early Years Teacher Status:
• This Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYTS) - Graduate Employment Route aimed specifically at graduates who are currently employed in an Early Years setting (12 months part-time course whilst you train on the job in your place of employment)

Entry requirements for this course are normally:
• Ordinary or Honours degree
In addition you must also:
• have GCSE or equivalent in English, Maths and Science at grade C or above prior to application
• undergo Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and health clearances
• currently be working with children up to the age of five in either an early years setting or in a school nursery/reception class, or as a registered child minder
• be able to communicate in standard spoken and written English
• have passed your skills tests in literacy and numeracy before you start the course. You must have registered for the tests before we can interview you.
• complete a satisfactory interview

We review all optional modules each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.
We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year.
Sometimes we have to make changes to other aspects of a course or how it is delivered. We only make these changes if they are for reasons outside of our control, or where they are for our students’ benefit. Again, we will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before the relevant academic year. Our regulations set out our procedure which we will follow when we need to make any such changes.
When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. These include regulations regarding the assessment of your course, academic integrity, your conduct (including attendance) and disciplinary procedure, fees and finance and compliance with visa requirements (where relevant). It is important that you familiarise yourself with these as you will be asked to agree to abide by them when you join us as a student. Gaining Early Years Teacher Status could enable you to consider a wide range of roles in education, specifically teaching in private nurseries, pre-schools, nursery and reception classes in free schools and academies and also leading practice in Children's Centres and child minding networks.EYTS graduates may also consider leadership roles working in private day nurseries, in local authorities and in the voluntary sector, and working with families to support early childhood development.

Teaching and assessment
You'll be required to attend university for a maximum of 25 days to participate in taught sessions.
You'll be required to undertake a placement of approximately 30 days in a setting that is different to your own plus an additional two week placement in a Key Stage one class in school.
The course is assessed through course work, including observations of your practice in the workplace.You'll typically be assessed against the eight professional standards for Early Years Teachers (NCTL, 2013).There are no timed tests or exams. The assessment on the course allows you to demonstrate your practical knowledge and skills alongside developing your critical and theoretical understanding of the subject. The assessment builds on your particular interests and context and is likely to have outcomes that will be of benefit to your professional life and to your employer. You will be provided with guidance to help you develop your assignment work.
Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback is available after the publication of results

How much will it cost me?
Currently course fees are paid directly to the University by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and your employer may receive up to £7,000 to support your training costs.
Please note, you won't be eligible for student finance support from the Student Loan Company on this course.

Professional Skills Tests The professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy for trainee teachers are intended to ensure all teachers have a good grounding in the use of numeracy and literacy in the wider context of the professional role of the teacher, regardless of their specialism or intended teaching age range. The same expectations have to be met by all potential trainees, regardless of their previous qualifications.
