About the course

This specialist skills and post registration development short course may be of interest to social workers who are looking to develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting assessed social work placements.

It offers you the opportunity to:

• Explore theories around adult learning whilst evaluating your own learning and supervision needs as a practice educator.

•  Evaluate different teaching methods, design and plan learning activities to facilitate the learning of others

• Explore how to develop learning opportunities for students.

• Examine the process of preparing and maintaining a successful placement in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

You will also have the opportunity to:

• Identify, utilise and evaluate theories of supervision, practice learning and assessment.

• Explore and critically analyse the principles of a learning organisation and reflect on how this is currently interpreted within your particular organisation.

• Evaluate the effectiveness of a learning organisation in line with current training and development frameworks and workforce planning needs.

Please note that this short course is a pre-requisite for the [Enhancing Practice Educator Skills|00007013] short course.You must successfully complete both courses in order to be able to independently support and assess social work students in line with the Practice Educator Framework.

Entry requirements

You must:

•  Be a qualified social worker currently registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC).

•  Have two years post-qualifying experience.

•  Be able to act as a practice educator for a social work student alongside the course.

Professional links and accreditations

The University of Huddersfield delivers this specialist skills short course in partnership with Kirklees Local Authority, Wakefield Local Authority and the University of Leeds. It also meets the requirements of the Practice Educator Framework, Domains A-C.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars and guided study, which will be supported by the University's virtual learning environment.

Assessment will include the submission of a portfolio.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Huddersfield is the only University where 100% of the teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.*

∗permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.
