About the course

This specialist skills and post registration development short course is aimed at newly qualified social workers. It is designed to support and assess you in your probationary first year in employment.

This course will support you in the preparation of your practice portfolio and will provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development, which is a requirement for your continuing registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

It will also assist you in:

• Developing skills, competencies and confidence within your first year of practice.

• Developing an understanding of professional social work practice within your working environment.

• Demonstrating capability within the context of the Professional Capability Framework endorsed by the Department of Health and associated bodies.

Entry requirements

You must be:

•  A newly qualified social worker registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

•  Normally in your first year of employment.

You will also require a practice educator from within your agency.

When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. These include regulations regarding the assessment of your course, academic integrity, your conduct (including attendance) and disciplinary procedure, fees and finance and compliance with visa requirements (where relevant). It is important that you familiarise yourself with these as you will be asked to agree to abide by them when you join us as a student. This specialist skills and post-registration development short course is linked to professional requirements as laid down by the government's Social Work Reform Board.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops.Your studies will be supported by the University's virtual learning environment.

Assessment will include the submission of a portfolio.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

∗permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.
