About the course
This course is primarily aimed at international students looking to progress into a career teaching children and young learners English as a second or foreign language. This course gives you the opportunity to develop your theoretical knowledge and practical skills to help ensure you've got the confidence essential for planning and teaching English to speakers of other languages; understanding of different learning cultures, language acquisition and how to apply this to your own classroom practice. We'll also support you to develop your ability to critically reflect on your own personal educational development.
You'll be taught by an outstanding team of teachers; in fact we've been ranked in the top five in the Guardian Guide for Education 2016 for the sixth year running. This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of English language teaching, and to the principles of supporting children's learning up to the age of eight years.Following this, you'll study research methodologies before progressing your own research interest as part of your Major Study.
Introduction to TESOL
This module will seek to provide you with an introduction to the theory and practice of English language teaching. You’ll have the opportunity to examine a range of methodologies and materials for the teaching of grammar and skills, from both a practical and theoretical perspective. Assessment typically involves planning and resourcing a number of lessons and writing a reflective commentary and analytical report of the lesson plans.
Support Learning in Young Children
You’ll be introduced to the principles of effective teaching for supporting children’s learning. You'll learn about the concept of inclusion, the principles of both medium and short term planning, and a variety of perspectives on planning and teaching. Assessment is typically via peer presentation and the development of a written, reflective report.
This module allows you to pursue your particular interests and demonstrate the breadth of knowledge, understanding and strengths that you have developed during your degree studies. You’ll be supported to select a relevant topic and develop a proposal. This module is your opportunity to bring together everything you have learned in a study of your choosing and you'll typically be assessed via a dissertation.
This module explores a range of research strategies and methods, preparing you to assess the value and significance of different approaches to data collection and analysis within your field of study. You’ll learn how to develop your own research design, and how to collect and analyse information in order to find out new things about a topic that you’re interested in. Coursework typically involves developing your own research proposal.

This course seeks to prepare you for work in a range of international educational settings teaching English to children and young learners English as a second or foreign language (TESOL).
Teaching and assessment
You'll be taught through a combination of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, group work, discussion, independent study and reviews of published papers. Assessments also vary and include essays, presentations, peer teaching/training, poster presentations, reports and a major empirical study.
You'll also have a personal tutor who'll be assigned to you throughout your course to support your ongoing wellbeing and ensure that you have a positive learning experience.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

The full-time undergraduate tuition fee for 17/18 entry is £9250.

If your English language is not at the required level (IELTS 6.0 overall), we have a range of Pre-Sessional English programmes that you can enrol on before starting your degree course. You will not need to take an IELTS test after completing one of our Pre-Sessional English programmes.
