About the course
The MPharm course at Huddersfield has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, and the knowledge, professional skills and outlook to support you in a career in any area of pharmacy. With a focus on medicines and patients from the very first week, the four year course is structured around both annual and continual themes. This aims to support your learning experience as your studies are integrated between science practice and practical and professional skills. If you enjoy solving problems, working with people and studying science, and you want a career in a health related area, then pharmacy may be ideal for you.
Our teaching staff have expertise across all areas of pharmacy and other areas of science. You'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience using scientific instrumentation in our modern laboratories, including a formulation laboratory where medicines are made.
This course as with all other Pharmacy degrees in the UK is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

The course has been constructed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in pharmacy, focusing on evidence-based practice. You'll have the chance to take part in placement visits from the outset, and then in each subsequent year of study. These help to provide you with valuable practical experience and the opportunity to learn alongside other healthcare professionals.
Pharmacy Practice 1
This module introduces you to the roles of pharmacists in society and as a member of the healthcare team. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the profession, pharmacy law, pharmaceutical ethics and how to dispense prescriptions, which is assessed to a high standard. You’ll be taught pharmaceutical calculations, effective communication and learn how to diagnose and treat minor ailments. The module provides the opportunity to spend time in practice environments with practising pharmacists. The module is assessed by coursework, including a portfolio and dispensing and calculations test, and an examination.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry 1
This module lays the foundations for the study of the properties and origins of drug molecules. The module will help you to develop your knowledge of analytical methods (principles, design, development and application) and will explore the chemistry and properties of the principal functional groups. A key facet will be to enable you to develop your understanding of how physical, chemical and drug properties can be predicted. The module is assessed by coursework and examination.
Human Physiology and Pathology
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to normal and abnormal human bodily functions. This module introduces basic physiological concepts and the pharmaceutical relevance of these will be highlighted using clinical examples. This insight into human physiology aims to enhance your understanding of related subject areas such as pharmacology. The laboratory sessions help you to gain basic laboratory skills in physiological measurement. Opportunities for collaborative learning will be available through the online group-based activities. Assessment of the module is by coursework and examination.
Formulation and Compounding of Medicines
This module introduces you to the formulation of medicines and the principles governing pharmaceutical preformulation. Lectures covering the science of dose form design are brought to life in the practical sessions, where you’ll have a go at making medicines such as antacids, cough mixtures and moisturising creams based on a prescription, and use your knowledge to judge the suitability. This module will be assessed by practical and written examinations.
Scientific Basis of Drug Action
This module will provide an introduction to drug action in the body including their molecular and cellular targets, it will also provide an introduction to basic pharmacokinetics. The structure and function of biological macromolecules that interact with drugs, for example enzymes, receptors and membrane transporters will be outlined. DNA replication, transcription and translation will be covered. A basic introduction to innate and adaptive immunity will also be given. Drugs used for treating disorders of the gastrointestinal system, skin, musculoskeletal system as well as for the eye, ear, nose and throat will be considered as these are referred to in dealing with minor ailments in Pharmacy Practice 1 and Formulation and Compounding of Medicines.
Formulation and Pharmaceutics
The major part of this module deals with powder technology and the formulation of tablets and capsules. We study the unit processes used in the manufacture of solid oral dosage forms. We'll help you to develop competence in the interpretation of data generated in practical classes. Given the complexity and multifaceted steps in the formulation of tablets in particular, we can then apply that knowledge to the formulation of other dosage forms. This module also gives you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the principles of biopharmaceutics and its importance in dosage form design. The module will be assessed by coursework including a poster and examination.
Pharmacy Practice 2
This module completes the introduction of the pharmacy law and ethical framework, political context and underpinning knowledge for the safe, accurate and appropriate supply of medicines. Responding to symptoms introduced in year 1 will be extended and linked to perceptions of health and illness and health promotion, with an equal emphasis on the health of individuals and populations. You’ll have the opportunity to study the needs of patients with acute and chronic disease along with ethnic, cultural and religious variations in health, illness and diet. And the requirements of the population at different times in their lives, with respect to dietary needs, lifestyle advice, prevention and treatment of disease, along with pharmaceutical calculations appropriate to service provision. This module helps you to further develop your communication skills and the skills necessary to form intellectual opinions and arguments, and to communicate these effectively. You’ll also have the opportunity to extend your inter-professional education by placements with other healthcare professions. This module is assessed by coursework, including a dispensing and calculations test, and an examination.
Medical Pharmacology 2
This module provides you with an in-depth account of drugs that are used to treat disorders of some of the complex organ systems. You’ll have the opportunity to study in detail the principles of pharmacology, which underlie the rational use of therapeutic agents in the management of chronic diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems and inflammatory responses, and become familiar with the main drug classes used to treat these conditions. The module will be assessed by coursework and examination.
Drug Synthesis Metabolism and Analysis
In this module you’ll be able to study drug synthesis and metabolism and have the opportunity to learn how the chemical properties of drugs affect not only the way in which they work and their effects, but also their pharmacokinetic properties, which include their metabolism and the ways in which they can be formulated. The aim of this module is to help you to broaden your knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry including the synthesis and metabolism of drug molecules and the importance of physical chemistry and analytical science in their characterisation. Throughout this learning you’ll also be able to develop your critical evaluation and problem solving skills. The module will be assessed by coursework and examination.
This module provides both a practical and a theoretical grounding in microbiology with an emphasis on health, hygiene and disease control. The module aims to help you to develop an understanding of the main groups of disease causing microorganisms; experience with the manipulation and growth of microorganisms and an understanding of the major microbial infections and the pharmaceutical approaches available for their control. The module has a strong practical component, which complements and consolidates the theoretical aspects of the course by providing the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the manipulation and growth of microorganisms. Assessment is via coursework and an examination.
Medical Pharmacology 3
This module will help you to gain a deep and broad knowledge and understanding of the function, structure and pathophysiological conditions of the central nervous system (CNS), the endocrine system, and cancer pharmacology. The module will provide the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the pharmacological managements of such systems to treat different pathological conditions. The module will be assessed by coursework and examination.
This module looks at the concepts, philosophy and ethos of using research to provide evidence of best practice. Topics range from pharmaceutical sciences through to pharmacy practice. Working in a research environment with a supporting lecture programme, you’ll be able to develop the skills of hypothesis formulation and testing, data acquisition and analysis, experimental design, literature retrieval and report writing. Feedback on your understanding of statistical methods is by a module test at the end of the lectures. Assessment is by a research report, oral and poster presentation.
Pharmacy Practice 3
This module provides the core of the third year of your degree focusing on the practice of pharmacy. It aims to support a significant stage in your professional development and provide you with the knowledge and skills to deliver pharmaceutical care and meet a wide range of patients’ needs. This module aims to provide the basic components of clinical evaluation of prescription and patients in both community and hospital practice by covering long term conditions, enhanced and advanced services in community pharmacy and acutely sick and clinically complex individual prescriptions in hospital practice. Assessment is by coursework and examination.
Pharmaceutical Formulation and Drug Analysis
This module aims to enable you to deepen and broaden your understanding of pharmaceutics and biopharmaceutics and your knowledge of different dosage forms, delivery methods, route of delivery and formulation design and manufacture. You’ll also develop your understanding of the structure of biological barriers for safer and efficient drug delivery and targeting. The formulation development workshop will give you the opportunity to apply the pharmaceutical science to practice. This module also enables you to gain up to date analytical skills, in both theory and practice, and to maintain the quality, safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. Assessment includes both formative assessment (assessment for your learning) in tutorials and workshops to discuss your model questions and develop your problem-solving skills and summative assessment by coursework and examination.
Pharmacy Practice 4
This module has a strong emphasis on preparing students to make the transition to practice. The module content completes the underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare the students for pre-registration. Alongside the knowledge the learning reflects the necessary skills which will act as pre-cursors for the General Level Framework for Pharmacist Development thus supporting the link between training and practice. The module includes clinical problem solving alongside business skills and an update on issues of current debate in the profession of pharmacy, health and social policy and NHS structure and organisation. The module is delivered around the four themes of delivery of patient care, problem solving, personal development and management and organisation.
Applied therapeutics - Patients and their Medicine
This module will focus on the application of an integrated knowledge base to inform decision-making and problem-solving of issues regarding pharmaceutical care of individual patients. It will have a strong focus on problem solving and pharmaceutical care planning whilst also introducing you to a variety of therapeutic areas and their management. Students will develop and apply their clinical pharmacy and critical evaluation skills to a variety of patient cases and commonly encountered scenarios.
Drug Design and Development
This module helps you to develop an in-depth appreciation of the stages involved in drug design and development. Lectures cover methods used in drug design and discovery, emphasising state of the art therapeutics and future prospects and highlighting how advances in science underpin drug discovery and development. The module also provides the opportunity to apply your knowledge by developing your own formulation, which you’ll prepare and test in the laboratory. You'll receive feedback on your plans during a group presentation,prior to laboratory work and deliver your formulation development report as a group. There is also a final written examination.
This module covers the pure and applied scientific background knowledge and skills required for an understanding of how inter-individual genetic differences between patients may influence their therapeutic response to medicines. Two important concepts - pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics - are covered, alongside the technology and research methods used to validate their use and bring them into the clinic. The importance of biomarker detection and analysis in a range of disease states are discussed and you’ll be set the task of researching the pharmacogenetics of current therapies and how these may or may not be translated to the clinic. This is a multidisciplinary module covering aspects of molecular biology, genetics and therapeutics, together with their implications for the future practice of pharmacy. Assessment is by coursework and examination.

As a Pharmacy student you are required to take part in work based placements throughout your course. We aim to organise four placements, of a day each per year, in years 1, 2 and 3, and a single four day placement in year 4. Placements are organised to offer a wide range of opportunities in different healthcare settings including hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, independently-owned and multi-national pharmacies, GP practices and outpatients clinics Whilst some are in Huddersfield you'll also be expected to travel to surrounding towns and cities in order to experience different hospitals and a good variety of services. Most students travel by public transport but some also take part in car sharing.
Whilst on placements and during professional activities you'll be expected to wear business dress, so you will need to have at least one professional outfit.
98% of graduates from this course go on to work and/or further study within six months of graduating.
Previous graduates from this course have gone on to roles such as Clinical Resident Pharmacist, Oncology Pharmacy Researcher and Pharmacist in organisations including the NHS, Boots and King's College Hospital.*
Becoming a pharmacist in the UK: After successfully completing the course you will be awarded a Master of Pharmacy Degree (MPharm).
In order to become a legally qualified pharmacist in the UK, you must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Membership is granted to graduates with a degree in pharmacy from an approved UK university. This is conditional upon successfully completing one year's pre- registration training at an approved establishment and passing the GPhC Registration Exam.
Pre-registration training can involve hospital, community and industry settings. For those considering hospital or community pharmacy the training is usually 12 months. For those considering Pharmaceutical Industry, the training is 6 months combined with 6 months in either hospital or community pharmacy.
All international students from outside the European Economic Area, graduating with an MPharm from a GB university, must apply for a visa in order to work in the UK i.e. undertake their pre-registration training.
Pharmacy offers a variety of interesting careers. Pharmacists can work in a range of positions, with the possibility of flexible working across its various sectors including community, primary care, hospitals and industry. Students taking a degree in pharmacy can feel confident that they are starting on a career in which there will always be a need for their services.

Teaching and assessment
40.5% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, workshops, practicals etc.
You will be taught through a series of lectures and workshops alongside laboratory practicals and practice visits, as well as directed personal study. Online learning will also be used which you will be able to access from any computer in your own time. Your progress will be assessed in written exams, essays, short tests, portfolios, and oral presentations.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
The full-time undergraduate tuition fee for 17/18 entry is £9,250.
Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check takes place after enrolment, during induction week. Under current arrangements (from 2017) the University will pay the DBS fee. Relevant offences disclosed by the DBS will be taken into account regarding your suitability to undertake this course. Once your place is confirmed, you'll be required to complete a health check questionnaire. If you have not completed courses of all relevant vaccinations you will be advised to do so. Occasionally these may be chargeable by your doctor. If there are any further medical reports required you may incur additional costs.
All pharmacy students attend work-based placements, currently 4 days per year. We aim to offer these within a reasonable commuting distance of Huddersfield. We do not charge for placements but you may incur some travel costs.
We provide students protective clothing, a copy of the British National Formulary and access to the electronic resources necessary for study and practice including Medicines Complete. Most assessed work is submitted electronically at no cost to students. Where this is not practical some printing costs will be incurred. Currently these do not exceed £10 per year.
An optional field trip will be offered during the course to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, which you will need to pay for if you choose to attend. The cost of this trip in recent years has been approximately £20 per student.
You may also have the opportunity to apply for an optional transatlantic exchange programme with Wilkes College of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania. There are four places available each year and selection is by interview to those who express an interest. If successful you would need to cover the costs of your two week trip, which in recent years has been approximately £1500 per student.
Progression to a postgraduate course is dependent on successful completion of your undergraduate studies. There may also be minimum qualification requirements such as a first class or higher second (2.1) degree. Please check the course details to confirm this.

If your English language is not at the required level (IELTS 7.0 overall with a minimum 6.5 in all elements), we have a range of Pre-Sessional English programmes that you can enrol on before starting your degree course. You will not need to take an IELTS test after completing one of our Pre-Sessional English programmes.
