About the course
In the global hospitality industry, hospitality business leaders need to have an in depth understanding of management. Hospitality Business Management students undertaking a modern language at Huddersfield do just that, studying a language alongside international business specifically applied to the distinctive aspects of the hospitality industry. The course is designed around what the Hospitality industry wants, ensuring that our graduates are in the best possible position to go directly into challenging and rewarding positions within multi-national organisations both nationally as well as globally. Our excellent employability record is a direct result of students developing critical skills in business management, which lead to career opportunities in the highly competitive and international work environment of Luxury Hotels and Resorts Management, and other high-end Hospitality Businesses. Continually evolving, modules are designed to progressively build knowledge and understanding of the core management subjects, focusing on finance, marketing, human resources and operations management alongside hospitality specific options.

Year 1 includes fundamental management modules as well as the inclusion of personal and professional development which will build and grow throughout your time on the course.
Markets and Marketing
This module explores the behaviour of markets and the responses of organisations through their marketing activities. It will help you to develop an understanding of marketing theory and practice and help you to develop the skills to produce a well-researched marketing plan.
Behavioural Approaches to Work and Society
This module analyses the sociological, psychological and cultural influences on people in organisations and the ways in which these factors affect how organisations function and operate. You’ll explore the role of the manager and the theories and frameworks that support managers.
Professional Skills and Finance
This module has two components. In the first term you’ll be given an opportunity to develop the personal and professional skills needed to be an effective hospitality manager. These include report writing, presentation skills, information retrieval and team working skills. The second term is an introduction to essential accounting concepts that you’ll need in order to feel confident about managing a business.
Elected Modern Language
Year 2 builds on the core subjects and includes more specialised areas, all invaluable for a career in the hospitality industry.
The international field trip is also a significant feature of year 2 and integrates learning from all modules, both formally and informally, to illustrate the application of theory in an international context. Previous trips to France, Switzerland, Spain and Malta have been well received with students enjoying this aspect of the course.
Consumer Behaviour and Experiential Marketing
This module will build upon your knowledge of marketing from an experiential and consumer-orientated perspective. You’ll have the opportunity to extend your knowledge of contemporary approaches through studying experiential and online marketing. The module should also help develop your understanding of the key factors that motivate individuals to consume experiential provisions (i.e. events, hospitality and torusim) and you’ll have the opportunity to gain skills to identify potential markets for marketing strategies.
Human Resource Management for Hospitality Management
The understanding of human resource management is vital to the success of organisations within the hospitality, events, tourism and leisure industries. This module provides an introduction to aspects of Human Resource Management & Development and will demonstrate the contribution that they can make to organisational success. It focuses on the diverse roles of HR specialists and line managers in relation to aspects of employee resourcing, relations, reward, learning and development, planning, recruitment and selection, appraisal and performance management.
Food, Culture and Society
This module investigates and evaluates the development of national, regional and international cuisine and its wider impact together with the implications for the economic and social environment. Contemporary development within food and beverage will be studied to help you to manage complex associated issues linked to the understanding of food, wine and culture. Innovation and concept development together with menu analysis and management is also discussed.
Management Theory and Practice for Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Industries
This module engages in the development of organisation and management concepts and theories through the exploration of organisational social history, with significance given to contemporary managerial approaches applied at both corporate and operational level for the hospitality, travel and tourism industries. You’ll explore leadership issues, group dynamics, group decision-making, effective communication, organisational culture, structure, and change management processes.
Elected Modern Language
Year 3 – optional placement year The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.
This supports the knowledge and experience gained in previous years with modules designed to develop a strategic perspective of hospitality management alongside detailed research skills.
Research Methods and Hospitality Project
The principal outcome of this module is a fully developed undergraduate project. The module will commence with the writing of a proposal which will consist of the project title, its aims and objectives, an outline structure with the selected methodology, a proposed plan of work and its relationship to previous work, together with the principal references. To facilitate this, you will be exposed, via a combination of formal lectures and tutorial support, to a variety of project suggestions and a range of methods for carrying them out.
Strategic Management for the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Industries
This module will address principles of strategic management and is applied to industry practice. It covers the four elements of strategic management, namely: Strategic Analysis, Strategic Choice, Strategic Implementation and Evaluation. You’ll have the opportunity to explore issues such as competitive advantage, sustainability, competence-based organisations, dispersion of knowledge, supply chain and value chain, mergers, acquisitions, strategic alliances, hostile takeovers, generic strategies, adaptive strategies, disruptive innovation and the digital age.
Management of Organisations for the Hospitality Industry
This module explores theories and applied concepts in contemporary management thinking for the hospitality industry. You’ll engage with issues such as business ethics, values, vision and mission, corporate social responsibility, leadership, learning and decision-making, managing performance, corporate and occupational identity, organisational and occupational culture, organisational and occupational commitment, innovation and adaptive change processes in the hospitality industry.

We review all optional modules each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.

Our Placement Office works with national and international employers to ensure excellent work experience opportunities are available to our students on placement courses as well as giving advice in areas such as interview skills and preparing CVs and covering letters.
Previous placement providers have included companies such as Marriott, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Hilton, De Vere and Park Plaza, Red Carnation Hotels as well as Greenwich Country Club in Connecticut. Some of our students are currently working in the United States, Germany, Hong Kong and China.

Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a series of seminars, lectures, workshops, live business case studies and field trips.In addition cutting edge E-learning in the form of the flipped classroom means that lectures are enhanced by directed private study. Students are provided with a selection of material such as notes and screen casts produced by the module tutors, and videos, journal articles and book chapters from third parties. Students complete a questionnaire on the material, to reflect upon the areas where they feel there are gaps in their understanding with the responses then informing the content of classroom sessions. This flexible and responsive method is popular with students and has seen an increase in grades achieved. Assessment will include exams, oral presentations, individual or group essays or reports, case studies, in-class tests, peer assessment, individual reflective learning portfolios, time constrained assignments, group projects and management and marketing projects or dissertations for final year students.

The full-time undergraduate tuition fee for 17/18 entry is £9250.
