About the course
The fashion and textiles industry offers diverse opportunities, from forecasting trends, developing new products and buying ranges, to visual merchandising, marketing and managing retail stores. This course allows you to develop a wide range of skills that will help you to become a confident professional in the dynamic and global world of fashion and textiles. What makes this course unique is the hands-on experience it offers you in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which connects teams around the world in all stages of the product lifecycle, such as designers, merchandisers, manufacturers and retailers. Gaining experience in this could help you stand out in the graduate market and be ready for a successful fashion career.
During the course, you'll have the chance to develop your business skills and industry knowledge, as well as expertise in researching new market opportunities and solving problems creatively. You'll also be supported in developing your visual, intellectual and multidisciplinary skills, your abilities in teamwork and communication, and your commercial and technical awareness.
This course is accredited by the Textile Institute, a worldwide organisation for textiles, clothing and footwear. The course scored 100% for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2015.

Inspirational field trips to destinations of educational and cultural significance are a compulsory component of the course and will be funded by the University. Trips may include visits to museums, exhibitions and trade shows.
Design and Fashion Business
This module provides an introduction to the fashion and textile industries from concept through to retail sale. The concepts and principles of the design process within the context of fashion and textile business from research through to retailed product will be introduced. The module describes the textile manufacturing process from fibre through to the final product. You will explore the development of fashion products from fibres and fabrics through the development processes required to meet the needs of the consumer to the effective marketing of the product to the consumer. A portfolio of four assignments (each 25%) will give you the opportunity to research; the design process, the choice of fibres and fabrics, the fashion consumer and the fashion retail business.
Principles of Marketing
This module will develop your understanding of the principles and practice of contemporary marketing management. You will be introduced to the key concepts and tools of marketing including analysis, planning, implementation and control. The assessment comprises an individual assignment (worth 30% of module marks) and an end of year examination (worth 70% of module marks).
The aim of the module is to introduce and develop knowledge of the retailing industry, its structure, formats and operations. It will further develop this knowledge with particular emphasis on the retail marketing mix and its implication for retail management. The module will also explore current trends in retailing. It aims to provide you with an appreciation of the various facets of the retail industry and to provide a foundation for advanced retailing modules. It will also seek to develop enterprise and transferable personal skills using the retail industry as a vehicle. 50% group presentation/50% individual briefing document.
Context and Communication
This module will introduce you to the fashion industry, in particular to the primary influences on the design, development, marketing and communication of fashion and textile products. The critical role marketing and branding play in today's industry will be explored, with particular focus on the use and application of digital communication between fashion and textile organisations and their consumers. You’ll be asked to produce a portfolio of written/visual assignments (50%) that focuses on the historical, cultural and contemporary influences on fashion and retail trends. Your individual contribution to a team presentation together with supporting written and visual work (50%) will give you the opportunity to research the application of marketing and branding to a fashion business.
Product Lifecycle Management
The module builds on product related projects (practical and theoretical) introduced at foundation level. It explores the processes of new product development, manufacturing, retailing and how they are managed through the concept of Product lifecycle management (PLM). The aim is to develop a multi-tiered understanding of the dynamic processes involved in global sourcing of products, textiles and materials, along with a commercial awareness of the production process from fibre through to retail product. There are two assignments (each 50%) for this module; a technical package and a business case.
Fashion Buying Merchandising and Retail
This module provides an in-depth exploration of buying, merchandising and retail within the international fashion and textile industry and how these are managed. It will provide a structured approach for developing understanding of the diverse nature of roles and related responsibilities of careers within the industry and different fashion retail channels. It will help you to acquire knowledge and skills related to the fashion industry and develop your ability to respond to opportunities within the wider scope of areas relating to fashion retail. 50% visual plan/50% visual report.
This module aims to develop your understanding and appreciation of the dynamic processes involved in anticipating the future needs and expectations of fashion consumers, and the strategies global fashion and textile organisations use to meet these needs. The contemporary, global fashion industry will be viewed and examined from the perspectives of the consumer, the manufacturer and the retailer. The module also looks at how processes, procedures and practices are managed, and consider their sustainability, in diverse fashion and textile organisations. You’ll examine the role of trend forecasters in anticipating the changing needs and expectations of the fashion consumer. Assessment: 20% Poster, 40% Individual Industry Report, 40% Market Report.
Year 3 - optional placement year
School of Art and Design Placement
You will normally spend a total of 48 weeks between the end of year two and the beginning of your final year in a managed work experience. You will be encouraged to obtain a placement activity relevant to your area of specialism, however a wide range of placements will be regarded as suitable. The placement will be monitored and you will be assessed on completion. (100%).
International Business with Finance
This module gives you an opportunity to explore the complex business environment of the international fashion and textile industry. It provides you with the conceptual and theoretical underpinning that will allow you to analyse and evaluate the international strategies that fashion and textile companies are pursuing to gain a competitive advantage. It also focuses on the global and legal issues which may impact upon design, manufacturing and marketing decisions. Recognising that the common language of business is finance, this module will introduce you to key business financial methods as management tools to assess performance and facilitate decision making. There are two assignments for this module: a team presentation (30%) of the opportunities and difficulties of either sourcing textiles and fashion globally or international retail market expansion, and a comprehensive report (70%) with macro and financial analysis of potential suppliers.
Contemporary Issues in Fashion and Textiles
This module will focus on the study of fashion and textile organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate. The aim is to build familiarity with, and an understanding of, the real issues that currently face organisations involved in the development, marketing and retailing of fashion and textile products. The case study (30%) offers you an opportunity to work with an organisation to identify and research current organisational/process/product issues. The dissertation provides you with an opportunity to research thoroughly an aspect of fashion business (70%).
Fashion and Textile Buying/Management/Retailing Major Project
The major project is the culmination of your studies on the course, and offers you the opportunity to develop your intellectual ability to research, evaluate, innovate, problem-solve and communicate effectively as a fashion and textile industry professional. This is a forward-looking, self-directed project on a subject you propose, which is negotiated and agreed with your course tutors, and so it is likely to reflect your specific professional interests and your career aspirations. The nature of the project is established within a feasibility study and project management report (30%). The final outcome (70%) is a written and visual report A1 poster which is introduced in an individual verbal presentation.

The course offers an optional one-year (48 week) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad. This will give you the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience, insight into your chosen career and open up your graduate employment prospects. Our Placement Unit and academic staff have excellent industry links and can support you in applying for and finding your placement(s), as well as during your placement year.
Students on the course have recently taken up placement opportunities with companies including: Nike - Amsterdam; Marks and Spencer - London; Karl Lagerfeld - Amsterdam; Jimmy Choo - London; Mamas & Papas - Huddersfield; Bon Marche - Wakefield; Christy Garments - Barnsley; and Missguided - Manchester.

This course aims to help you develop the skills needed for roles such as buying, merchandising, range selecting, product development and e-commerce. Recent graduates have gone on to work for companies including Ted Baker, Next, Boohoo, Missguided, Kaliko, ASOS, White Stuff and Arcadia.
Professional links and accreditations
This course is accredited by the Textile Institute, a globally recognised awarding body of Chartered Professional Qualifications. The accreditation means that the course fulfils the academic requirements for the Licentiateship of the Textile Institute qualification - the industry standard for those working in Textiles, Clothing and Footwear. This is testament to the quality of the teaching and learning on the course. The accreditation also means that in addition to your degree and with a suitable work placement year, you could apply for the globally recognised LTI professional qualification. This can enhance your CV and differentiate you from others in a competitive jobs market, by showing that you have specialist knowledge in one area and at least one year's professional experience.
This course has recently become the first university course in the UK to teach product lifecycle management (PLM) using the retail system, PTC FlexPLM. This means that you'll have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with this industry system, helping to prepare you to step into the industry. We've also just helped students on the course achieve the WhichPLM Academy Bronze Level Certificate alongside their degree. This certificate is recognition of their education in PLM and could give them a competitive advantage in the jobs market.
Teaching and assessment
26.67% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars etc.
You'll be taught through a series of lectures, workshops, tutorials, group seminars and presentations. We use a range of assessment methods to relate the course material to current commercial practice, which include individual and group assignments, essays and seminar presentations.

Our teaching spaces and studios provide you with access to industry-standard computer software as well as key resources including our online ‘trend hub'. This includes membership to leading fashion trend-forecasting services used within the industry. In addition to having full access to the facilities during University opening hours, you'll also be able to access the specialist software licensed to the University from your own computer, whilst away from the campus out of studio opening hours. This means you won't have to invest in expensive software packages or memberships during the course.
How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.
