About the course
As people are the most important resource in an organisation, it's essential to recruit, retain and motivate the best staff for a business to be successful. On this course you'll specialise in human resource management and the role it plays within a business, studying how to manage and develop people, the professional skills required in the industry and how to recruit and inspire staff from a HR perspective. The course also helps provides the key business knowledge to understand how today's dynamic business environment operates so that you can set your human resource knowledge into context. We'll provide you with the opportunity to combine contemporary theory with real-world application, learning from leading academics and the cutting-edge expertise of our network of visiting business leaders. We work closely with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and you have the opportunity to achieve a CMI Level 6 Diploma in Management and Leadership through no additional study or assessment. This professional qualification will look great on your CV. We have developed the course in close association with employers and professional bodies, ensuring its relevance for today's jobs market. Your employability skills will gain a real boost from the ability to work with our HR professionals to improving your interview technique and experiencing the latest recruitment tools such as e-portfolios, apps and video CVs.

Behavioural Approaches to Work and Society
This module analyses the sociological, psychological and cultural influences on people in organisations and the ways in which these factors affect how organisations function and operate. You’ll explore the role of the manager and the theories and frameworks that support managers.
Professional Aspects of Business
This module introduces you to key areas in both legal and financial aspects of business. You’ll look at how financial information is prepared, presented and interpreted by internal and external users and consider aspects of employment and contract law relevant to non-specialists. As well as delivering theory and technical information, practical application is presented through worked examples, group working and discussions.
Managing Human Resources and Personal Development
This module provides an introduction to aspects of managing and developing people in organisations. The module explores the varied roles of people management specialists and line managers in areas such as people resourcing, employment relations, and equality and diversity. An integral element of the module is a programme of activities to enables students to identify, analyse and develop a range of skills for success in academic study in addition to the development of a broad range of employability related skills.
Introduction to Business Management
This module provides an introduction to Business Management and the essential knowledge and skills required to be a successful manager. It will focus on a range of key business management topics so you can learn about the integrated nature of business. It will allow you to understand the behaviour of markets and consider issues relevant to operating in a global business environment.
This module introduces the key discipline of business operations. Operations relates to the delivery of products and services, through the use of important planning and control techniques. After a general introduction to the concept some of the most important techniques will be covered such as capacity management, inventory management and quality.
Management Research Methods and Decision Making
This module introduces you to the theory and practice of research methods and decision making theory to learn and identify the different techniques needed to conduct high quality research and then apply that research to how decisions are made in business.
Leading and Managing Change
The aim of this module is to develop a strong understanding of change processes on personal, organizational, and societal levels so as to enable students to gain knowledge of various theories and models associated with leading and managing change.
Real World Business Issues
This module engages with live business issues and important worldly events via a series of invited guest speakers, inviting you to develop your thinking and questioning skills. Following these external inputs you will also have the opportunity to use your analytical, debating and argumentation skills in tutor groups, as well as applying your wider learning and research skills, ending in a group presentation assessing possible courses of action.
Human Resource Skills for Personal Development and Employability
This module will help you to develop and articulate skills for employability to support your application and entry to work in the HR sector. In this module you will start your career planning and developing employability and HR skills to prepare you for placement and/or employment in the HR sector. The seminars throughout the module are interactive, using tools developed by the University Careers Service as well as practical insight into the world of work and working lives.
Year 3 - optional placement year
The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.
Managing Organisational Design and Change
The module provides an insight and understanding of the concept, theory, tools and techniques associated with organisational design for sustained performance. Organisational design is the process of initial configuration and continual adjustment that enables an organisation to respond to demands and meet challenges encountered in the operating environment.
Management Work and Society
In modern society work is important for economic and social wellbeing, playing a central part in our lives. This core module builds on management theory studied in year one, exploring contemporary issues in the workplace and how to deal with them from a management perspective. Topics on this module include the role of gender in the workplace, professional work, the globalisation of work, the labour process, unemployment and the future of work.
Leadership: Process and Organisations
This module examines leadership theory and approaches with an understanding of the challenges involved in leading and renewing organisations in today’s increasingly complex and dynamic global environment. You’ll be introduced to models, theories and research in leadership, organisations and decision-making. Techniques for analysing organisation’s intra-relationships will be developed over the course of the programme of study. There are opportunities to develop your own group and individual leadership and followership skills.
People Resourcing covers a wide range of people management issues from pre-employment (corporate and HR strategic planning, recruitment and selection), initial and continuing employment (socialisation, performance management), to release from employment (redundancy, retirement, exit interviews). The module will focus on the strategic elements of people resourcing and the contribution that these activities can make to organisational success and achieving a high performance workforce in a rapidly changing environment.

Human Resource Development
Ever wondered how training and developing employees can add value to an organisation? This module will explore this, looking at how investing in staff in this way builds increased commitment and enhances skills. After a review of HRD, how we identify, plan, develop, deliver and evaluate training, we will consider interventions to support learning organisations as well as exploring the theories surrounding HRD.
Cross Cultural Studies
This module considers the influence that national culture has on behaviour and the implications of this for organisational design and management. The impact that working across national cultures is considered and how the cross cultural manager can be supported in a changing environment. A blend of theory and practice engages the learner in a range of organisational and cultural settings.
Digital And Social Media Marketing
Digital Marketing is a term which encapsulates the targeted, measurable and interactive marketing of products and services through the use of the internet. This module will investigate and explore a variety of digital and social media marketing tools and their implementation within a practical context. In addition this module will help develop your understanding of online consumer behaviour, organisational marketing strategy and online decision making through the use of Web analytics. You will also cover the practical aspects of online brand development and have the opportunity to gain an understanding of integrated marketing campaigns, search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media.
This module focuses on the theory and practical application of Employment Relations in the workplace. It will help develop an understanding of core employment legislation and management interventions that can be applied in the workplace to enable the effective management of the employment relationship.

Professional links and accreditations
You can register with the Chartered Management Institute, providing a further qualification and enhancing your CV through membership of a professional body. Upon successful completion of the course and after completing the registration, you can achieve a Level 6 Diploma in Management and Leadership.
Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, computer aided learning packages, directed study and project work. Assessment will include exams, oral presentations, individual or group essays or reports, case studies, in-class tests, peer assessment, individual reflective learning portfolios, time constrained assignments, group projects and management and marketing projects or dissertations for final year students.

The Business School was opened in 2010 at a cost of £17m and is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop. Located right next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal it's in a leafy and picturesque location at the heart of the campus.

Excellent teaching rooms combine with fully-equipped computer labs to provide access to technology and learning resources alongside 'The Street' cafe which offers space for socialising, networking and relaxation over a wide selection of fresh food and hot and cold drinks.
How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.
Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations. You will have to pay to register with the CMI to gain the Level 6 Diploma in Management and Leadership this is approximately £200. In addition, you will have to pay for text books and printing of course work and lecture slides where required.
Progression to a postgraduate course is dependent on successful completion of your undergraduate studies, there may also be minimum qualification requirements such as a first class or higher second (2.1) degree. Please check the course details to confirm this.
