About the course
This suite of management courses offers a wide and flexible range of options and is designed for students either continuing their management and business-related knowledge or, particularly, students from other non-business academic disciplines. As such, it's an excellent opportunity for students, from a variety of backgrounds, to acquire awareness and insights into professional management principles and practice.
We will equip you with the necessary knowledge of key management areas such as marketing, finance, people management and strategy which are covered on all routes. In addition you can choose to keep your Master's award quite broad or tailor your Master's award to specific specialism through the following choice of routes:

• An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants with other professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered individually.
• Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
In exceptional cases students with no appropriate qualifications but substantial work experience, who can demonstrate ability to benefit from postgraduate study, will be considered. Candidates' suitability will be assessed to evaluate their application in line with the University's Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning procedures.
Students wishing to transfer into the MSc Management suite from other awards or other universities will be considered on an individual basis based on the modular credit and learning outcomes already achieved.

You will study the following modules:
The module is structured to give you a theoretical and practical understanding of managerial marketing decision making. You will be introduced to general marketing concepts and the techniques and tools of market analysis required for developing and implementing effective marketing strategies.
This module provides you with a substantial body of knowledge relating to the principles of strategic management in particular the two broad areas of techniques for analysing organisations and their environments and the identification of appropriate strategic choices. You will be encouraged to practice analyses and strategic designs throughout the delivery of the module.
The module provides you with a theoretical framework for analysing your professional skills and reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will then form the baseline from which to develop a plan for your own professional development during their period of studies. You will need to demonstrate that you have developed new skills and competences over the duration of the module through a portfolio.
Managing People in Organisations (F/T)
Managing People in Organisations is an extremely practical module which introduces critically analyses and evaluates key elements of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour to enable effective deployment of people within organisations. A strategic exploration of the global context within which people work and are managed is also carried out through a range of organisational behaviour concepts and theories.
Finance for Managers
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.
Option modules (choice of 2)
Principles of Risk
This module provides knowledge on the multidimensional nature of risk. You will examine the different contextual settings in which risk arises and is interpreted, including business risk, environmental risk, individual and societal risk, and disaster risk reduction. The module encourages critical evaluation through relevant case studies and practical exercises.
The module involves an analysis of tourism and the structure of the tourist industry. Tourist destination and tourist market will be reviewed and the tourism marketing issues will be investigated. Impacts of tourism from economic, social, and environmental perspectives will be analysed in order to develop tourism products in the destination sustainably.
International Trade Operations
The module introduces the operational elements of international trade and the roles of the organisations involved. It considers the practical aspects of sourcing and purchasing goods and services internationally and also provides and understanding of the processes and procedures involved in the import and export business.
Economics of Financial Markets
After the global financial crisis, economic and financial interdependence have increased significantly. This module introduces you to a more integrated analysis of the economics behind banking and financial services, financial systems and institutions. It considers the impact of economics on financial markets by considering economic data, macroeconomic theory and some of the latest developments in the role played by monetary policy.
Social Media Marketing
This module is designed to introduce you to Social Media Marketing. It keeps you at the forefront of modern practices: bridging the gap between theory and its practical application. Students will use a variety of social media tools and platforms to design, manage, and optimise campaigns.
Strategic Brand Management
This module aims to allow you to develop a critical understanding of the strategic importance of brands and branding in an increasingly internationalised and globalised business environment. It is designed to provide a systematic understanding of how strategic decisions are made to build strong and successful brands.
Entrepreneurship in a Global Context
The module will examine how entrepreneurs create and manage emerging ventures in other countries, and create and manage start-ups or emerging ventures which are global in at least one important aspect. This module is evaluating the global and international environments in terms of the characteristics of economy, society and policy making for entrepreneurship of all types, such as science and social entrepreneurship.
New Venture Creation
The module will focus on the process of developing a new venture and writing and presenting an ‘elevator pitch’ to a team of potential investors. The module’s aim is to develop your entrepreneurial mind-set and familiarise them with the challenges and opportunities of starting and running a new venture. This module will examine the New Venture Appraisal approach to potential investors
International Business Environment
This module looks at of the international business environment and how various institutional contexts and factors such as political, economic and social factors have influenced, and continue to influence international business. This module is designed to develop/widen the knowledge and understanding of the major issues that businesses are confronted with when operating in international markets.
Cross Cultural Management
Competence in interacting with people of different cultures is an essential element of international business. The purpose of this module is to develop your personal and professional skills through enhancing your knowledge and understanding of culture and ability to recognise how differences in cultural affect individual and business behaviours. The module draws upon cross-cultural and social psychology theory to develop an understanding and practice of cross cultural competence. You are encouraged to develop an awareness of your own cultural frameworks, consider attitudes to cultural differences with others, develop a knowledge of different cultural practices and knowledge of the process of acquiring cross cultural skills.
This module considers business as a socially responsible activity through which improvement and sustainability are rooted in ethical awareness and action. Students consider what constitutes a responsible business, what the global impact of business is, and whether ethical businesses can be commercially successful whilst critically engaging their own values through reflexivity and a critically evaluative case analysis for assessment.
Global Leadership and Change
This module addresses the need to adapt to different international cultural perspectives and worldviews in the light of changing ideas. A topical and eclectic guest lecture series stretches your thinking and conversational skills leading to an individual assignment which assimilates the ideas received during the lecture programme.
A written group assignment gives you the scope to identify important global concerns and develop new insights into leadership and change issues.
Management of International Hospitality Organisations
This module critically explores contemporary forces within the Management of International Hospitality Organisations. On completion of this course students will have the ability to synthesise and apply concepts in an informed and innovative way; with the objective of addressing plausible solutions to on-going organisational dilemmas in the international hospitality industry, brought about by the management of discontinuous change.
Hospitality Operational Analysis and Planning
This module aims to increase your understanding and analytical skills when faced with performance management of the hospitality industry. You will be able to investigate an international hospitality business and present an overview of your findings. Moreover, you will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of operations.
Service Operations and Marketing
This module develops your exposure to the needs and wants of a variety of service customers, including the buying behaviour of service customers, segmentation strategies and the customer experience. You will develop your knowledge of managing operations through methods, models, tools and techniques relevant to service provision. The assessment for this module is a 5000 word analytical report based upon an case study.
This module will introduce you to the various finance theories that affect the financial management of corporate organisations including corporate reports for capital markets. You will have the opportunity to develop a critical awareness of the theories of corporate reporting practices and their impact on market information, along with a critical evaluation of finance theories relating to the internal financial management of organisations.
Globalisation and Financial Crisis
This module builds on your knowledge of the fundamentals of globalisation and financial crises. You will have the opportunity to explore global economic downturns and consider the causes and consequences of such events.
International Human Resource Management
This module explores human resource management emphasising the international dimension. Differing national cultures and an increasingly globalised economy are key aspects of the module. The module examines the strategies and practices of multinational corporations as well as a range of public, private and voluntary organisations in a wide range of different countries and cultural contexts
Human Resource Strategy
The ways that people are managed have a big influence on organisational performance yet many organisations still fail to connect human resource management to business strategy. This module first examines the main Human Resource Management (HRM) practices before examining how it can be linked to business strategy.
An opportunity to pursue an area of business management that interests you or which you are passionate about comes in your choice of project. You have a choice of two routes: Research Route or the Consultancy Route.
Final Project/Research Route
Research Methods and Techniques
This module is a designed to prepare you for your research. The module looks at how to choose your topic, how to research the current knowledge in your area of interest, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The module is assessed through the completion of a literature review and proposal for your dissertation. You will be supported both by the module team and an individually assigned supervisor.
Economics Research Paper
You will work with academic staff to produce and submit a journal-type piece of work for publication, in any area of economics. This provides a greater insight into the subject for those wishing to continue their studies at doctoral level whilst adding value to the CVs of those taking up graduate employment
Final Project/Consultancy Route
This module prepares you for the Applied Consultancy Project. It introduces the theory underpinning the process of consultancy in organisations. The module will analyse various models of consultancy and you will explore different stages in the consultancy cycle including: the purpose of consultancy in business context, project scoping and contracting, information gathering, analysis and report, action planning, implementation, review and exiting. You will also critically examine your own consultancy skills.
Applied Consultancy Project
The consultancy project provides the opportunity to engage in an applied consultancy project, normally investigation with a business sponsor and provide solutions to a commissioned business problem. Students teams will be expected to engage in the process of scoping the project with the business client, undertake the necessary information gathering, analyse the information and make recommendations. Such company problems may be of a strategic or operational nature, thus allowing you to draw on several disciplines in order to apply theory to current business practice.
In the Research Route, you can choose an area of research of personal interest and related to your subject area in Management, with a view to conducting original research that can help illuminate understanding of a particular area of business. In the Consultancy Route, you will be engaged in a ‘real world' project, normally with a business sponsor and provide solutions to a commissioned business problem. You will work in small teams to engage in the process of scoping the project with the business client, undertake the necessary information gathering, analysing the information and make recommendations back to the client.

We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.

Teaching and assessment
Exposure to various activities at the University of Huddersfield will enrich your knowledge and skills. An intensive induction pre-course workshop, which will be held on September (for Autumn Starters) and January (for Spring Starters), gives you more insights about the course, promote interactive environment between your colleagues and meeting with your tutors. The core modules are generally taught and assessed using case studies in lectures and seminars and in some modules group project-based work. This is a well-established course that aims to address the needs for local and international students, which enhances the diversity of students. Tutors are experts in their field and some of these tutors came from practice which makes teaching not limited to knowledge only, but also to its practical applications. Many aspects of teaching and assessment are grounded in real life situations and, where possible, live projects are incorporated into the teaching. You will also get the opportunity to engage with professionals and consultant guest speakers who can talk about their own experience and provide their own inspirational perspectives.

The £17m Business School is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop.
All teaching rooms are high quality and the school has a number of computer labs for teaching or for students' individual or group use. You'll have comprehensive access to online resources through Unilearn, an online learning environment which gives access to all the study materials you'll need.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the full-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £5,100 (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations. Interim Awards A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take one calendar year full-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level or Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
